Tim Britton's unique style as a young American with many influences is well founded on a thorough knowledge of the Irish tradition. Born into a family central in the Philadelphia folk scene, Tim grew up at the many festivals throughout the sixties. At age ten he became fascinated with his Celtic roots and immersed himself in all facets of the culture, picking up the tin whistle, highland and uillean pipes, and wooden flute, as well learning the dancing. He quickly gained the respect of the musicians on the East Coast and was soon performing with the best of them. The scarcity of uillean pipes led him to make his own set, later to become highly respected in that field. His book on reed making is considered a classic text.
For nearly 30 years he has been touring, teaching, and recording, appearing on over two dozen records with the likes of Mick Moloney, Eileen Ivers, Johnny Cunningham, Robbie O'Connell, Gerald Trimble, Bela Fleck, John McCutcheon, Patrick Ball, Paddy O'Brien, and many others. He has taught extensively both privately and at piping conventions, festivals, and workshops such as the Augusta Heritage Arts Workshops. In 1989 he was designated a master artist by the Iowa Arts Council and was nominated for a "Best of Philadelphia Music Award". Since 1997 he has been touring with Paddy O'Brien and Pat Egan under the name of Chulrua. When not touring he makes pipes, and engineers and produces recordings in Fairfield, Iowa.
